Program Associate For International Security & Energy Policy Programs, The American Academy of Arts and Sciences
The American Academy of Arts and Sciences, an international learned society and policy research center with headquarters in Cambridge, Massachusetts, seeks a Program Associate to support its work on issues of Science and Global Security. The Academy’s Committee on International Security Studies is undertaking a major integrative project on the global nuclear future and energy policy. This is a unique opportunity for a highly motivated individual to play a role in significant intellectual projects involving some of the country’s most outstanding scholars and practitioners. The Program Associate may also work on other projects.
Responsibilities:
The Program Associate will:
- Provide research support for the Academy’s Committee on International Security Studies and other related Academy projects;
- Work with Academy Fellows and senior staff to identify and develop new projects;
- Organize conferences and symposia;
- Edit research papers and publications;
- Help raise funds to support projects from foundations and other sources;
- Maintain general administrative oversight of the program, including supervision of Program Assistants and other Academy staff working in this area.
Qualifications:
The ideal candidate will have:
- A Ph.D. or other relevant degree, with demonstrated interest in and knowledge of international relations; issues of international security and nuclear nonproliferation; and related energy issues.
- Familiarity and experience with current policies and scholarship in international affairs and security policy;
- At least three years relevant experience in academic or project administration, and an interest in a career in international policy research;
- Excellent writing skills and communication skills;
- Successful grant writing experience.
- Ability to work collaboratively and effectively in a team environment.

Second Annual Summer Training Programme on Disarmament and Non-Proliferation of Weapons of Mass Destruction, T.M.C. Asser Instituut for International Law
From 29 August - 3 September 2011 the T.M.C. Asser Instituut for International Law, in partnership with the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW), will organize the second annual summer training programme in The Hague, the Netherlands on Disarmament and Non-Proliferation of Weapons of Mass Destruction in a changing world.
This second-year programme is specifically designed for advanced graduate students and young professionals who are interested in pursuing careers in arms control, and will provide unique insight into treaties, organizations and effective multilateral approaches in WMD disarmament and non-proliferation.
The programme content will be delivered by experienced officials of the OPCW and other international organizations together with international experts in international law and related disciplines, offering participants hands-on knowledge transfer from key professionals in the field.

German Chancellor Fellowship, Alexander von Humboldt Foundation
An International Opportunity for Prospective Leaders and Young Professionals
Germany’s Alexander von Humboldt Foundation awards ten German Chancellor Fellowships annually to young professionals in the private, public, not-for-profit, cultural and academic sectors who are citizens of the United States. The program, which also includes fellowships for citizens of the Russian Federation and the People’s Republic of China, sponsors individuals who demonstrate the potential to strengthen ties between Germany and their own country through their profession or studies. The fellowship provides for a stay of one year in Germany for professional development, study, or research. Prior knowledge of German is not a prerequisite. Fellows are provided with intensive language training prior to and during the fellowship.
The program begins September 1 and lasts twelve months. It is preceded by three months of intensive language classes in Germany. Candidates must have received their bachelor’s degree after September 1, 2000. Application deadline for U.S. applicants: October 15, 2011.

The Monterey Institute of International Studies has launched a new M.A. degree in Nonproliferation and Terrorism Studies (MANPTS) This degree, the first of its kind in the
Courses for this degree will be taught by faculty of the Graduate School of International Policy and Management; by policy, scientific, and technical specialists in the James Martin Center for Nonproliferation Studies (CNS) and the Monterey Terrorism Research and Education Program (MonTREP); and by experts invited from international organizations, government agencies, the private sector, and leading universities all over the world.
Students in this M.A. program may also gain practical experience through internships at international organizations or work as research assistants at CNS (cns.miis.edu) and MonTREP (www.miis.edu/academics/researchcenters/terrorism).
Placement assistance from our Center for Advising and Career Services helps graduating students find professional positions in government agencies and international organizations dedicated to combating terrorism or the spread of WMD as well as private firms specializing in security research, corporate security, or related fields.
